Radiator Installation and Replacement

A radiator replacement can improve appearance, heat output and control, but the new radiator must suit the room, existing pipework and heating system.

REZ Heating & Plumbing Services replaces and relocates radiators, fits valves and carries out associated pipe alterations across Colchester, Essex and Suffolk.

Helpful guidance

Like-for-like replacement

A like-for-like replacement is normally the simplest option when:

  • The new radiator has the same dimensions
  • The pipe centres match
  • The existing valves are serviceable
  • The wall and fixings are suitable
  • The heating system can be drained and refilled normally

Even then, modern radiators may have slightly different bracket positions or connection depths, so careful measurement is still important.

Moving or resizing a radiator

This can involve:

  • Altering floor or wall pipework
  • Lifting floorboards
  • Extending or rerouting copper pipe
  • Filling and making good old pipe positions
  • Checking heat output for the new radiator size
  • Replacing valves or fitting TRVs

Relocating a radiator normally takes longer than a like-for-like replacement.

TRVs and lockshield valves

A thermostatic radiator valve controls the radiator according to room temperature. The lockshield valve is used during balancing to control flow through the system.

Replacing old or leaking valves at the same time as the radiator can be sensible, particularly when the existing fittings are seized or badly corroded.

Sludge, cold spots and balancing

A new radiator will not solve every heating problem.

Cold areas may be caused by:

  • Air in the radiator
  • Sludge inside the radiator
  • Poor system balancing
  • Restricted valves
  • Pump or circulation issues
  • Incorrect pipework

If several radiators have the same problem, the wider heating system may need investigation rather than a simple radiator replacement.

FAQs

Questions customers often ask before booking

Can you fit a radiator I have purchased?

Yes, provided the size, connections and heat output are suitable.

Does the whole heating system need draining?

Often, yes. The method depends on the system layout, valve condition and whether safe isolation is possible.

Should I replace the valves at the same time?

If the valves are old, seized or leaking, replacing them during the radiator job may be more economical than returning later.

Can a larger radiator be fitted?

Usually, but the heat output, wall space, pipework and boiler/system capability should be considered.
