When a macerator is suitable

Macerators are commonly used for:

• Downstairs cloakrooms
• En-suite conversions
• Toilets below or away from the main soil stack
• Utility or basement installations
• Replacement of an existing failed unit

A conventional gravity connection is normally preferable where it is practical. A macerator is useful when the property layout makes a standard soil connection difficult or excessively disruptive.

Replacement versus new installation

Replacing an existing unit may be relatively straightforward when the discharge pipe, electrical supply and fittings are suitable.

A new installation requires more planning, including:

• The permitted discharge pipe size
• Vertical and horizontal pumping distance
• The route to the soil connection
• Access for future servicing
• Electrical provision
• Ventilation around the unit
• The appliances or fixtures connected to it

Manufacturer instructions matter. A poor discharge route or unsuitable connection can lead to repeated blockages, noise or premature failure.

Common macerator problems

Typical faults include:

• The unit runs but does not clear properly
• The motor runs continuously
• The unit becomes noisy
• The toilet backs up
• The discharge pipe blocks
• Internal seals or switches fail
• Wipes or unsuitable items enter the unit
• The unit is boxed in with no service access

A macerator should never be treated like a normal toilet. Only toilet tissue and normal waste should enter the unit.

Noise and access

All macerators make some noise. Excessive vibration can be made worse by poor mounting, contact with furniture or badly supported pipework.

Access is equally important. A neatly hidden unit is useful only if it can still be reached for servicing or replacement. Permanently sealing a macerator behind fixed panels often creates unnecessary damage later.
